Limited Edition Huia Framed Illustration Print

The Huia holds a special place in New Zealand’s natural and cultural heritage. Its last officially recorded sighting was in 1907, but the decline of this remarkable bird had already been set in motion in 1901, following a visit to New Zealand by the Duke of York (represented by the white rose).

During a formal welcome at Whakarewarewa, a Huia feather, traditionally reserved as a symbol of honour for distinguished visitors, was placed in the hatband of the Duke’s bowler hat. This seemingly small gesture sparked a fashion craze for Huia feathers, contributing to the growing demand that ultimately played a significant role in the bird’s extinction.

This illustration pays tribute to the beauty, significance and enduring legacy of the Huia, capturing a piece of Aotearoa’s natural history in a timeless artwork.
